Elections 2017 - Elmbridge Candidates

These are some of our Elmbridge candidates in the County Council elections on 4 May. We will post information about the others as we receive it. They are standing on a manifesto which prioritises:

  • building a Green economy which creates local jobs
  • protecting the Green Belt and our wider countryside
  • ensuring safe, sustainable, accessible and healthy modes of transport across Surrey
  • defending our public services so that all Surrey residents have a good quality of life
  • working with honesty and transparency to the highest possible standards

Please support your Green candidate!

Hersham - Olivia Palmer

Olivia PalmerI am proud to stand as the Green Party candidate for Hersham in the upcoming Surrey County Council elections. In 2015 I became the first Green Party Candidate to stand in Parliamentary elections for Esher and Walton. Since then, I have continued my mission to help promote environmentalism and equality within the area. Last year in the Hersham ward elections I beat the Liberal Democrats, Labour and UKIP. This means in Hersham Ward the Green Party are the leading mainstream political party to rival the Conservatives.

The growing success of the Green Party is no coincidence, Hersham faces many environmental threats. Traffic in the local area is ever increasing. The recent decision to cut bus services served only to exacerbate the situation. The resulting pollution is putting lives at risk. No promises have been made over how Hersham (nor surrounding areas) will be protected from the noise and traffic resulting in Heathrow expansion. New flats are often built but due concern is not being given to the environmental impact or affordability of these buildings.

I am a member of Elmbridge Friends of the Earth and have joined them in promoting local and national campaigns. One of our most popular campaigns has been to save the bees in keeping the ban on neonicotinoids (pesticides that kill bees). We are currently undergoing a local air monitoring project to track pollution levels in Elmbridge. I also volunteer locally for two charities, one supporting animal welfare and the other enriching the lives of local people with learning disabilities.

The Green Party currently have one councillor on the Surrey County Council who has been excellent in standing up for environmental and social justice. The Green Party continues to promote divestment from fossil fuels on the council. We really need more Green Councillors to achieve our vision of a greener and fairer Surrey.

West Molesey - Sarah Spencer-Bowdage

Sarah Spencer-BowdageI, along with my two children and husband have lived in West Molesey for the last 6 years. I am really proud to call West Molesey my home, it has such a wonderful sense of community and fantastic green spaces. I have worked in health improvement for the last 15 years and care passionately about supporting people to live well and understand how important the local environment is in achieving this. I would campaign to stop a third runway at Heathrow and the associated noise and air pollution it would bring to West Molesey. I want to see a more equal society and an NHS that is fit for purpose, well-funded and stop private companies pocketing millions on a daily basis. I want to make sure Molesey remains a fantastic place to live and would welcome the opportunity to represent the views of West Molesey residents on Surrey County Council.

Weybridge - Lesley Tilling

Lesley TillingI am standing for election as a member of the Green Party. I was born and brought up in Walton-on-Thames and have lived in Weybridge for the last thirteen years, working at Brooklands College and Guildford College. The Green Party is the only political party seriously confronting the question of global warming and the consequent climate changes facing our planet. In Surrey the Greens campaign to keep our distinctive countryside rather than extending the dormitory area for London and we strongly support the maintenance of the Green Belt. Surrey social services have been cut harshly and we campaign against further cuts. By cutting business rates we will prioritise trade from High Street shops. We campaign against the extension of Heathrow and Gatwick airports, to avoid the increase in vehicle traffic, air and noise pollution which would result from an increase in flights, and locally, we prioritise effective public transport and cycle lane provision.
