Greens from all over Surrey to join ‘Austerity Kills’ Action in Woking

15 December 2018

On Saturday 15 December, hundreds are expected to join the ‘Austerity Kills’ action in Woking Town Centre. They’ll be making their voices heard, alongside Surrey firefighters, who are protesting the continuing cuts to Surrey Fire and Rescue which they say are putting Surrey residents in mortal danger.

Greens from all over Surrey will be swelling the numbers and Jonathan Essex, Green Surrey County Councillor will be speaking at the rally.

Councillor Essex says: “The relentless paring down of funding for vital public services - with further planned cuts to care homes, special needs provision, children’s centres, libraries, buses, health provision, fire and rescue – is weakening our communities and risks making our county a more dangerous place to live. The latest round of cuts will hit the poorest and most vulnerable hardest. We need both government and council to lead in ending austerity and to radically cut our carbon emissions instead. Climate change is upon us and it is imperative that we all act together now. We cannot kick our addiction to oil locally and make our society fairer and more resilient against this backdrop of punishing public sector cuts.”

Councillor Essex has tabled a question about the latest cuts for the upcoming Surrey County Council meeting on Tuesday 11 December.
