Elections 2017 - Spelthorne Candidates

These are some of our Spelthorne candidates in the County Council elections on 4 May. We will post information about the others as we receive it. They are standing on a manifesto which prioritises:

  • building a Green economy which creates local jobs
  • protecting the Green Belt and our wider countryside
  • ensuring safe, sustainable, accessible and healthy modes of transport across Surrey
  • defending our public services so that all Surrey residents have a good quality of life
  • working with honesty and transparency to the highest possible standards

Please support your Green candidate!

Ashford - Rupert Jackson

Rupert JacksonI have been involved with the Green Party for the last couple of years standing as a ward candidate in 2015 local elections and securing nearly 700 votes. I have some experience in campaigning and writing through working with various charities including Friends of the Earth, Sustain and Keep Britain Tidy. I am standing as a Green Party candidate because it is the political party that has the most coherent and progressive economic and social model and accompanying policies; one that could sustain the environment, people and communities and the planet as a whole, were they given a fair chance. As a Green Party councillor I would endeavour to protect local services from the austerity measures handed out by Government and challenge their endorsement by local authorities. I would support initiatives, including new ones that serve local people in conserving ecosystems and enable the well-being of communities.

In summary I support the Green Party's vision of breaking down divisions, being all-inclusive and working for the greater good: the mutual benefit that comes from improving people’s lives whilst enabling the natural world to thrive.

Laleham and Shepperton - Peter J. Hughes

Peter J HughesVoters need Green Party candidates because they have no other escape from traditional political parties, which all subscribe to "Big Business as usual" and give priority to short-term economic growth, above preventing climate change or protecting the environment, so ensuring long-term catastrophe. I have lived in Shepperton for 40 years. I am Secretary of the Residents Association, a Walk Leader for the Borough, a Healthwatch volunteer, and Chair of the Patient Participation Group for the Health Centre. Before retiring I was a Chartered Civil Engineer, and am currently encouraging people to volunteer for flood defence co-ordination. I belong to the Technical Committee supervising, on behalf of our residents, the development of the Eco Park.

Lower Sunbury and Halliford - Steve Trafford

Steve TraffordTake back control of our council.

Surrey County Council has been run by the Conservative Party for decades. As a consequence the Council’s funding is in chaos. They have committed themselves to austerity, whilst increasing their own expenses allowances. To cutting our services, and to privatising every social provision. We in the Green Party will fight for our Fire and Rescue Services, for a fully funded Adult Social Care Service, for the retention of our Street Lighting, the proper maintenance of our Highways and the protection of our Green Belt from fracking and oil drilling. It’s time to vote Green and take back control of our Council.

Staines - Elizabeth Mansfield

Elizabeth MansfieldHere in Surrey, we have been disastrously served by a Tory dominated council intent on cutting services to the bone - our fire services, care for the elderly, bus services and more - while building the hated Eco Park at Charlton Lane and allowing planning applications that encroach on our green belt and wildlife habitats. The Thames Relief Scheme is stalled and Staines residents face as much danger from flooding as ever. Greens will take action, protesting Heathrow expansion and further deterioration of our air quality, fighting against cuts to local welfare provision and for investment in Green jobs, strengthening our local and Surrey-wide economy and communities and protecting our environment.
